This week library visits begin for all grades. Kindergarten, 2nd, and 4th will hear stories celebrating books and libraries. With 1st grade, I will talk about handling books with care, and we will have an activity: the "No No Never Never!" box in which I have things that should be kept away from books! In addition, that grade will receive a bookmark on the same theme. Grade 3 will be introduced to our online catalog. Grade 5 will begin a multiweek review of library skills that I hope can be mastered before the students head off to middle school. In addition, the deaf and hard-of-hearing students on our campus will have their first visit to our library! It should be an exciting week for me and, I hope, for the students. Thursday night is Back-to-School Night, and the library will be open! Please come by and get to know our library. Parents can become patrons--it just takes a moment to sign up. At 5:00 that evening there is a general PTA meeting. Our PTA is terrific, full of nice people who work hard and accomplish incredible things for our school. I urge you to attend the meeting and support the PTA.
There are a couple of great literary events coming up! Tuesday, September 6, local author DJ MacHale will be appearing at Pages: A Bookstore to promote his brand-new book, The Curse of the Boggin! I am so eager to read this new, slightly scary, middle-grade novel! DJ is a terrific speaker and writer. He is well known here in the South Bay, so I would suggest RSVPing for this event by phone (310-318-0900) or email (info@pagesabookstore.com). Then, on Tuesday, September 28, James Dashner, author of the best-selling Maze Runner books, will be speaking at Mira Costa. Tickets are recommended but are free of charge. Mr. Dashner will be signing copies of his new book, The Fever Code, which can be ordered from the ticketing website.
