This week is all about Halloween and Red Ribbon Week. All grades are hearing books related to one of those two themes.

Tuesday, October 25, the library will be in use all day for vision and hearing screening. No regular class visits, circulation, or browsing will be possible that day because the screening requires quiet. Several classes have rescheduled to different days, so your children may want to keep their books in their backpacks so they'll be able to return them whenever they visit the library.

We are still looking forward to the arrival of books ordered from Scholastic. They will be distributed ASAP.

The County of Los Angeles Public Library's bookmark contest is drawing to a close. The last day to turn in bookmark designs is Monday, October 31. Entry forms can be obtained and returned at the Pennekamp Library, the school office, or any branch of the County of Los Angeles Public Library. Winners will be notified on November 7 and honored at the city council meeting on December 6.

The next meetings of the book clubs are coming up. Fifth-grade book club meets again on Friday, November 4. Fourth-grade book club meets on Friday, November 18. Club members, wear your wristband on book club days! New members are welcome.

I wait for him to tell me, because of course I don’t.

I try to hide my shock. Joe doesn’t seem like the poetic type.
His caterpillar eyebrows knit together. “That can be scary. But remember that water gives us life. It connects continents. It connects people. And in quiet moments, when the water’s still, sometimes we can see our own reflection.”
