This Thursday, May 10, is arguably the first event in the 2012 Summer Olympics: the lighting of the Olympic torch in Greece. The torch will then begin its travels to the Olympic Arena in Stratford, England. According to the BBC,
"The Olympic flame will be lit at the Temple of Hera in Olympia on 10 May and will travel round other parts of Greece before being presented to the London organisers in the Panathenaic Stadium, Athens, on 17 May in an hour-long evening ceremony.The following day, it will be flown in a gold-painted British Airways Airbus 319 - flight number BA2012 - to RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall.
It will travel in a ceremonial lantern, secured in a cradle, fixed to a seat.
On the morning of 19 May, it will be flown by helicopter to Land's End, from where it will be carried round the UK by 8,000 people over 8,000 miles for 70 days, ending at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford for the Games opening ceremony on 27 July."
In honor of the upcoming Olympic games, students in grades 4 and 5 will hear The First Olympic Games: A Gruesome Greek Myth with a Happy Ending, retold by Jean Richards. We will also watch a short promotional video about the torch relay from the London 2012 Olympics organization. Students in Ms. Hart's class, however, will continue their study of the Great Depression and Dorothea Lange by finishing Rudy Rides the Rails, by Dandi Daley Mackall.
All the week's reading selections can be found on the Weekly Readalouds page of this site. One other grade should be mentioned: students in grade 3 will hear The Friend, by Sarah Stewart. This book recognizes a housekeeper's care of a little girl. I like to read this book around Mother's Day in recognition of the women who care for our children like a mother would, when we moms (and dads) cannot be there due to work or other obligations. Being a mother myself, I recall with profound gratitude the marvelous women--notably Trisha, Miriam, and Amy--who took loving care of my sons when my husband and I were otherwise occupied.
