This week's theme is music for all grades except TK. For specific selections for each grade, please see the Weekly Readalouds page of this website. TK will be hearing books about outer space, as they are beginning their study of this topic.
One book that is of particular interest is The Farewell Symphony, by Anna Harwell Celenza, which tells the true story of Franz Haydn's motivation in writing his symphony no. 45. To make Prince Nicolas of Hungary understand that Haydn's musicians wanted to return home to their families, in the last movement the musicians gradually leave the stage, as you can see in the clip below, which I will show to grade 4. I hope to discuss with the students when music might be able to communicate better than words can. Best wishes to the many Pennekamp student musicians who are about to perform in their year-end concerts and congratulations to those who recently performed in the talent show.
My schedule this week is a bit funny. Tuesday and Thursday there will be no class visits as I will be finishing the processing of Pennekamp's new classroom Guded Reading books. Please forgive my occasional absence from the library these days and especially this week--these new "leveled" books will be really helpful for our teachers and students.
