All Pennekamp library books are now due. Please return all library books or pay for any that have been lost or significantly damaged. I can look up the replacement price of any book for which payment must be made, and a book's price is shown on the computer-generated email reminders going out daily. Payment must be in exact change or a check payable to MBUSD.
A hold will be placed on the report card of any student who fails to return or pay for his or her library books by the end of the school year. A hold will also be placed on a student's report card if his or her parent has unresolved library books at the end of the school year.
The Pennekamp library is closed over the summer. Fortunately there are several great public libraries right nearby. The Manhattan Beach public library has a summer reading program and has increased (it seems to me) their activities and cultural events with many fun, creative ideas for every age. The best way to find out about everything happening there is to sign up for the library's electronic newsletter. I know many families like the libraries in Redondo Beach, Torrance, and El Segundo. All are great options to make sure everyone has exciting reading materials for the summer!
In July, Pages bookstore is having its fun "Find Waldo in Manhattan Beach" scavenger hunt. Pick up a passport at Pages and find Waldo in twenty-five downtown Manhattan Beach businesses. The event concludes with a Where's Waldo? party at Pages on Sunday, July 29.
Summer is a great time for reading! Create a special, cozy reading place in your home. Bring books when you travel, or listen to a book all together on a family trip. Start a summer reading club for your child and a group of friends. Make sure books are handy throughout your home, in the car, and at the grandparents' house. Provide flashlights for after-hours reading. Read aloud during the afternoon snack and of course at bedtime. And parents, let your children see you reading, too. Talk at dinnertime about what everyone is reading. Plan on a weekly trip to the library of your choice. Make reading a part of every summer day--it's fun!
