--Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Monday, January 21, is a school holiday in observance of the birthday of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The tradition of participating in community service on or around MLK Day has led to the creation of numerous service opportunities and websites for potential volunteers. Resources include the following: Volunteer Match, Corporation for National and Community Service, White House, National Day of Service, and L.A. Works.
World Book Night is looking for volunteers who love books and reading to hand out free books on the evening of April 23, 2013. To be a book-giver, you must first apply, by January 25. The World Book Night organization provides book-givers with 20 free copies of the same book to be given out in a public place to individuals who may not yet have developed a love of reading. It’s fun and easy, and who knows—you might change someone’s life!
In the library visits this week, all classes continue with the California Young Reader Medal nominees.
There’s been a great response to the library’s re-distribution of the books for adults that have been removed from the library’s collection, but there are still many good books left. A donation of 50 cents per title would be welcome. Please come by the library to see what’s available.
The library will be closed Thursday after 11:00 so Ms. Barbara can attend a family event. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Book club for 5th grade will meet Friday, February 1, in the library at lunch recess. Interest is growing in the selected title: Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, by Grace Lin. Due to student requests, I will have three copies tomorrow to “sell,” for a $6.00 reimbursement cost.
