Last night the American Library Association presented its Youth Media Awards, the most famous of which are the Newbery Medal and the Caldecott Medal. See the full list of winners at this link. I am delighted that the current selection for the 5th-grade book club, The War that Saved My Life, received a Newbery Honor!
Barbara Siegemund-Broka, library media specialist, maintains this blog to inform Pennekamp students and families about library news and related content. Any opinions expressed here are solely her own.

The Whispering Skull, by Jonathan Stroud
The next day, Don Pepe stumbled out to the yard in his nightshirt. He tore away the blanket and pleaded:
"You have no tree to roost in, no hen and no chicks to comfort you, no grain to fill your belly, no sun to drive away the shadows. WHY oh why are you still singing? Promise to stop and I will set you free!"
One by one a quiet crowd began to gather in Don Pepe's yard.
"I sing for those who dare not sing--or have forgotten how," said the gallito. "If I must sing for them as well, señor, how can I keep from singing?"
